Everything to Know About Disposable and Single-Use Vapes

In response to the latest vaping regulatory updates, you may noticed freshly compliant disposable and single-use pod vape devices starting to pop up both at VAPELAB and stores elsewhere.

In the past, vaping a non-compliant disposable pod vape was as simple as removing the vape from its packaging and inhaling from the mouthpiece. As convenient as this once was, it also made vaping accessible to anyone who got their little hands around one.

Now, compliant disposable and single-use vapes are required to have a few design features to be fit for sale in New Zealand, and some vapers may have trouble navigating these new features - especially as they vary from brand to brand.

Along with a few additional changes, all compliant Single-Use Vape products must now include a child safety mechanism; a feature that requires the device to be activated before vaping, and a timer that deactivates your disposable and single-use vapes ten minutes after your last puff.

The child safety mechanism effectively acts as an on/off switch for your disposable pod vape, and has been implemented to help prevent young children from accessing or using your device. The latest regulations require that a disposable or single-use pod vape must be activated according to the following rule;

  • At least 2 simultaneous, or 5 sequential, operations to activate the device for vaping

With the wide range of vapes available at VAPELAB, the child safety mechanism has manifested in varying degrees from brand to brand. While all devices thus far have included a 10-minute shutoff timer, there are some differing methods to activate them.

How do I activate a disposable pod vape?

The method for activating will vary from brand to brand. Most devices will have written instructions, either on the box or other aspects of the packaging, to activate the device.

The most common methods that we’ve seen during the early-days of the regulation period are as follows;

  • IGO disposable single-use pod vape  - To lock/unlock, tap the charging port on the device FIVE times. The device will automatically lock 10 minutes after your last puff. This method also applies to;
  • XOXO disposable single-use pod vape - To lock/unlock, take five quick puffs from the mouthpiece of the device and wait 2 seconds before vaping. The device will automatically lock 10 minutes after your last puff.

As a rule of thumb, disposable pod vapes will require at least two or at most five user inputs before the device is ready for vaping. This should be indicated on the packaging of the device or inside the packaging itself - we encourage all vapers to give the product paging a thorough check before discarding.

If you are following the appropriate instructions and your device is still non-operating, the issue may be that your disposable pod vape needs to be recharged. Keep an eye out for a charging port somewhere on the device and use the appropriate cable to top up the battery.

If you have any trouble getting your single-use vape device to operate, find us at any of our two Wellington CBD locations and our team will be more than happy to help you get you started!

Until next time!
